Mobile Home Living 7th Anniversary Giveaway

Editor’s Letter from Crystal

I think we’ve accomplished a lot in the last 7 years! I’m pretty sure we’ve flipped a few opinions about mobile homes and I know we’ve helped quite a few homeowners understand and appreciate their homes better.

Hard Lessons Learned in the Last Year

I swore I wasn’t going to get all emotional but I’m really proud of this site if you haven’t noticed. I worked a lot of long hours over the years trying to figure out HTML and WordPress and what meta tags are (I’m still not sure about that last one). The first six years were fairly smooth sailing but this last year was rough.

I’m sharing my experience so it can help someone else from making the same mistakes I’ve made and to give a well-deserved shoutout and thank you to Kim Alley. The superwoman that has kept Mobile Home Living® together this past year.

So, I almost died last September.

I ended up with 4 pulmonary embolisms and 3 massive clots in my left leg, and they were not going anywhere without a fight. Three surgeries and 11 days in the ICU fixed me up just enough to get me into my own bed where I spent several months feeling sorry for myself.

Pulmonary embolisms occur when clots break up and travel through your heart to eventually make a home in your lungs.

I had no idea that I even had blood clots or how long they had been there (though hindsight is 20/20 and I now understand that I was experiencing severe symptoms as far back as April). Symptoms included excessive sweating, constant yawning, severe pain in my leg, trouble breathing, dizziness, and a metallic taste when I coughed.

Liv and I took the dogs for a walk around 8 pm Labor Day. I struggled the entire time. I couldn’t breathe and was sweating like a pig (no offense to pigs) so I walked into the house and immediately went to bed. I woke up the next morning with my left leg as purple and as big as Barney the Dinosaur.

Clots aren’t something most 40-year-olds need to worry about unless you spend a lot of time sitting or are on certain medications.

I suspect the clots formed because I spent hours in front of a computer either working my real jobs or playing around with Mobile Home Living over the years. There’s no way to know for sure.

I’ll never regret starting Mobile Home Living but I do regret not standing up more often and making sure the medication I was on couldn’t cause clots.

Giveaway and a Year in Review 1

Needless to say, I slacked a lot this past year but Kim saved the day and Mobile Home Living….

After the surgery and hospital stay, I had to have 4 shots a day in my stomach (ouch) and then physical therapy and rehab because the surgeries damaged my leg.

With all that, I just couldn’t motivate myself to write or keep Mobile Home Living going very well. I cared but I was so wrapped up in feeling sorry for myself and coming to terms with my sexy new limp and weight-gain that I couldn’t find the motivation or desire to sit in front of computer and type.

If it wasn’t for Kim stepping up like she did I don’t know that Mobile Home Living would still be going. She has written 99.99% of the articles and does everything else, too. I will never be able to put into words how much I appreciate her dedication and hard work. I wish I could pay her a million dollars a year because she is worth at least that.

Thank you, Kim. You are truly a superwoman and I hope you understand how much I appreciate you.

In the last couple of months, I’ve lost most of the limp but not the weight (it’s a slow process and bacon is delicious). I’ve gotten some of my mojo back and I’ve been more involved in the last 4 weeks than I had all year.

Mobile Home Living Plans for the Future

We’re starting a little in-house video series on Youtube! Topics include how to shop for a new manufactured home, how to get a manufactured home financed, and how to fix many mobile home repair and remodeling problems. The lighting kit just arrived and I’ve found someone that looks a lot better on screen than I ever will so our first shoot is next week. I’m hoping we can have it edited and up within the next month.

In addition to the Youtube series, Kim and I have an editorial schedule planned with tons of helpful articles and beautiful home tours. I’m working at least a few hours everyday now.

As always, if there’s anything we can help you with please comment them and we’ll try our best to help.

Most importantly, thank you for your support. We wouldn’t be here without you and your support. I appreciate you all and I look forward to another 7 years with you!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Mobile Home Parts Store was so kind to help us out with two of the gift cards ($100 and a $50). I respect MHPS because they create a lot of very helpful articles for mobile home owners and their prices are more than fair considering there are so few places to shop for mobile home parts.

Good luck, everyone, and as always, thank you for reading Mobile Home Living!

  1. I’m glad to have been led to this site – what a great resource, & congrats on the 7 years!! ? My SO & I have a 5th wheel RV permanently parked (since it’s not really roadworthy anymore without some work – which is just perfect for our needs) on family property. We’ve put a lot of time & creativity into it in terms of repairs, modifications, etc but there’s still SO MUCH to do and I’m looking forward to reading & learning!

Thank you, also, for sharing your scary & incredible story! May your healing journey continue!! ?

    1. Thank you, Lindsay!

I bet your little RV is gorgeous! You know, we’re always looking for cool homes to share and feature. I think the world needs to see as many affordable homes as possible so they can realize what a great life it is.

Thanks so much for the kind words! Hope to hear from you again!

  3. Wow, what a lot you’ve been through! I hope each day helps you feel better and better. Thank you to both you and Kim for keeping the site going. I found it two years ago after I bought my mobile home and love getting help and ideas here! Your work is appreciated.

    1. Thank you so much, Della (my best friend of 27 years is named is Della), I appreciate you taking the time to comment. It was definitely an eye-opener for me. I knew sitting at a computer all day was bad for your body but it was one of those “that’ll never happen to me because I’m healthy” kind of things. It did indeed happen to me, though!

      Appreciate you reading and commenting!

  4. Crystal,
Just wanted to express how lucky this community is that you were able to get the medical attention you needed. I have been coming to this web site for 5 years now and also get your news letters. I love your frank stories and missed your personal comments in them while you were away. I love reading and looking at what others have done to make their homes beautiful. (The remodeling features are my favorite). Please take care of yourself, and most of all Thank You !!
