Mid-century modern is one of today’s most popular decorating styles and for good reason, it’s beautiful and perfect for small spaces, especially smaller mobile homes.

We’ll cover some great ideas for this decor and share a beautiful 1965 mobile home with the iconic style.

Defining the Mid-Century Modern Style

Wikipedia defines mid-century modern as an architectural movement that used a unique style of functional but organically clean lines, open floor plans, and large windows to open up indoor spaces and allowed the outdoors to play a more prominent role in the design. Mid-century modern is also used to describe furniture, decor, and even graphic designs that are focused on clean lines and bold profiles.

The mid-Century style was born between 1933-1965 but designs from the 1950’s are especially significant.  After the horrors of WWII, the country was ready to move forward and they did so in a magnificently stylish way. It was an era that dreamed of space travel and futuristic technology and those desires transcended onto cars, mobile homes, furniture, and clothes.

Sleek lines, retro colors, and high function is the epitome of mid-century modern and perfect for a mobile or manufactured home.

Color Palette

A notable feature in mid-century modern homes is using a neutral color base and adding colorful decor and furnishings.

Light colors such as white, cream, or light grey are a perfect choice for a mid-century style mobile home. The lighter colors make an object feel farther away from you and help rooms feel more spacious because it bounces light so well.

Furniture 

Mid-century modern furniture and decor are best described as sleek and bold. Attention to detail and function are also important aspects of the style. Iconic mid-century styled furniture and decor is easy to spot. Just look for clean lines, soft curves, and tapered legs!

You don’t need to buy an entire room of furniture to get the mid-century modern look. One or two focal points can completely change the look of your room!

Thrift stores and garage sales are the best sources for affordable mid-century modern furniture and decor. Craigslist and eBay are other great sources. You don’t have to buy secondhand to get the look though. You can find affordable furniture in lots of places online such as Ikea, Wayfair, and Dot and Bo.

Decor

Simplicity is a big factor in the mid-century modern style. Choosing a few select pieces of decor can help you completely change the look of your room.

Geometric Patterns 

Another important design aspect for mid-century modern style is bold, geometric patterns. You can create an accent wall with wallpaper or frame some great retro prints.

You can also use paint to create your own mid-century style walls. RetroRenovation.com shares a tutorial on creating the Fransician Starburst pattern below with sponges and cardstock.

1965 Mid-Century Modern Mobile Home 

This 1965 mobile home has a great mid-century modern appeal. The large windows bring in lots of light that bounce around the white walls. The furniture and decor create a perfect mid-century color palette and the furniture has lots of curves.

    David here. I love to see my vintage mid century double wide. I wish I still owned it but I’m working on number five here at the Sahara Park in Palm Springs. When this park was conceived in 1955 it was truly a wonderful Delux Park that, in order to keep a trailer here it had to be a park model, with a roof over the trailer parking and long sheltered patio. Now over the years the trailers were pulled out and 60 foot 14 wides came in plus most folks closed in the patio to create a florada room. I have a before and after of one space. In the 50s there was a shiny new Spartin with an open patio. Now it’s hard to believe it’s the same spot but that’s progress. I will look where I can show the before and after. Plus I have lots of pictures of this original 1955 Fleetwood Custom. It’s been fun restoring it. Plus great views of the mountains!

  6. Im restoring a 1959 Road-liner 50 x 10 1 bath and one and a half bathrooms!
    Im doing a Youngstown kitchen and trying to preserve whats left to preserve
    There are a few very respectable 55 plus Parks in Palm Springs Its awesome if your in to vintage trailers and face it

    I am the person who owns this MCM and I believe I sent you a picture of it as I was restoring it. It looks like it was designed by Wexler who did a lot of early Palm Springs. The first day I listed it I had a full price offer (I knew I should have listed it for more) well, if fell out of escrow and is back on the market. It’s also in the best part of So PS the Twin Palms area. Thank you for featuring my home on your website
