Park Model Home Decorating Ideas – Beach Cottage Chic

This park model home turned beach cottage is beautiful!

Park model homes are best known for their second story, a design descending from the 2-story mobile homes that became so popular in the 1950s.

Most park model homes are marketed as temporary or seasonal living structures and are not classified as a manufactured home. Park model homes that have less than 400 square feet(or 540 sq. ft. in Canada) of living space are titled, registered, insured, and taxed as recreational vehicles. This classification relaxes building code requirements since they are not permanent dwellings.

The Cozy Beach Cottage

This home is a feast for the eyes and includes lots of great park model home decorating ideas that you could use in your own home!

I found this beautiful park model home at Homeaway.com, a website where people can rent their properties out by the night, week, or month. The home is a 3-minute walk from the beach in Encinitas, CA. It has one bedroom and one bath along with a small sleeping area on the second floor, sleeping 4 comfortably. It is available for $158 per night. The home measures in at 480 square feet so it has likely been classified as a manufactured home.

Park Model Home Decorating Ideas for Your Exterior

This park model home may be small but it has plenty of curb appeal.

There are lots of great decorating ideas used on the exterior of this home. First, the siding is painted with a natural blue/ gray color reminiscent of grass and sea. Secondly, a bold white color was chosen for the trim to create contrast and accent the home’s architectural features.  Lastly, lush landscaping gives the home bulk, helping to ground it to the space, and tall vines strategically placed to frame the home draws the eye up, making it appear larger than it is.

The kitchen is decorated in a warm old world country style.

Decorating a small kitchen can be challenging if you don’t know a few tricks used by designers. One of the easiest tricks is to paint much of the interior space in a light, neutral color. Structural elements such as ceilings, walls, and cabinetry painted the same light color helps reflect light and makes a space seem larger.

Beautiful Double Wide with Country Primitive Decor

Double Wide Decor: From Sales Office to Beautiful Home

Karyn Hamilton and her husband bought a bank foreclosed 28×72 double wide ten years ago. It had been used as a sales office so it took an extra touch to turn the manufactured home into a great space anyone would be proud to call home. They did it, though. With Karyn’s interior design talent, the former sales office was transformed into a beautiful double wide with country primitive decor.

The Kitchen

The beautiful double wide with country primitive decor home has new counter tops and a great tin backsplash adds lots of function and style.

The couple also removed the popcorn ceiling throughout the home, painting the smooth results in a bright white. Trim was also painted a clean white – pulling the space together perfectly.

Affordable DIY Backsplash – Mosaic Tile Paint Project

Having a unique backsplash is a relatively new concept in home decor. Just a couple decades ago the idea of a backsplash was rarely a high priority, or even considered at all, in kitchens decor. My, how times have changed!

These days a backsplash is a practically a must-have for modern kitchen design. It brings a bit of color and independent style into a space that doesn’t normally get much. It also makes cooking messes easier to clean.

Installing a new backsplash in your kitchen will instantly update the room and there’s a style for every budget and taste.

Tile is the Most Popular Backsplash Material

Today’s most popular backsplashes are made of tile, typically formed in a rectangular shape, aptly called a subway tile. Another popular shape is the smaller rectangular tiles that can be purchased as a sheet, often called mosaic tile.

Tile Backsplashes Can be Expensive!

Unfortunately, one of the biggest downsides of a tiled backsplash is cost. If you want the latest, trendy style with colorful mosaic tiles you’re gonna be paying quite a bit for it. Even if you install the tile yourself you will still spend anywhere from $5 to $100 per square foot for the material alone. That’s a lot of money for a relatively small space!

One creative homeowner, found on Imgur, figured out how to have the tiled backsplash look without the extravagant price and you can do the same thing in your home!

Affordable DIY Backsplash Paint Project

You can have a colorful, trendy backsplash without the high price by using acrylic paint and sealant over your manufactured home vinyl coated walls or sheetrock.

Before you begin your DIY backsplash project find photos of your favorite mosaic tile backsplashes. This will help you choose the right paint colors. Also, note the way the tile is placed – there are many different patterns that you can copy. Below is just a few examples, though using a simple pattern is best since you will be using tape and paint to achieve the look.

How-to Instructions for a Beautiful and Affordable DIY Backsplash

Material List

Your material list will include basic painting project supplies. Here’s a list of everything you’ll need for this awesome DIY backsplash:

  • Cleaning agent and rags to clean the walls (this is more important than most realize – you need a strong bond so the paint won’t peel, especially if your home has vinyl walls).
  • High-quality painters tape. You’ll probably want to use the 1/4 (.25) inch tape to tape the tile although a roll of the thicker 1/2 inch tape is handy to have as well. Don’t skimp on quality!
  • Acrylic craft paint in the color scheme of your choice. The creative homeowner in the photos used earth tones and it looks great!
  • Paint brushes and small foam rollers.
  • Paint trays.
  • Sealant. Polyurethane works well for most needs but make sure to research so you get the right type for your walls.

Step 1: Clean the area where you want your new backsplash with a fairly strong cleaning agent.

You’ll need the paint to bond tightly to the walls, regardless of what they are made of, so a standard cleansing agent should work fine. Older manufactured homes will probably have VOG panels (vinyl over gypsum) and it’s perfectly OK to paint over them as long as you clean them well and use the right kind of primer to create a strong bond.

Learn more about painting mobile and manufactured home walls here.

Step 2: Tape the area off and apply primer tinted the color you want to use for grout.

Once you’ve cleaned the area well and allowed it to dry, you will then tape off the area where you want your backsplash and apply primer.

You can use a plain primer or a paint+primer in one. Plain white primer makes for a great background and is what the homeowner in the photos used (it turns out great) but you can add a tint if you want. Refer to your favorite mosaic tile backsplash photos to see which grout color looks best for your chosen color scheme.

Step 3: Tape off your tile pattern.

This is one of the most time-consuming steps but it is important to take your time and get the lines straight and the pattern uniform. Using a high-tech laser level is recommended. You should be able to rent one from a local tool supplier if you don’t want to buy or borrow one. You can also use the old-fashioned bubble levels but that’s going to create a lot more work!

Using a laser level for straight lines - Using a laser level for straight lines - Affordable DIY Backsplash – Mosaic Tile Paint Project

Depending on the pattern you use and the total area of the space you may choose to go with thicker or thinner tile. The horizontal lines in the photo below have been taped off at 1.5-inch intervals.

Taping off the tile lines for painted tile backsplash project - Beautiful Painted Back Splash DIY Project 13 930x425 - Affordable DIY Backsplash – Mosaic Tile Paint Project

Once you have your horizontal lines completely taped off you will need to do the vertical lines. If the basic brick, or stretcher bond, the pattern will be used you can randomly place the vertical lines by sight, unless you want everything equally space. In that case get the calculator out and start doing some math!

The creative homeowner simply placed her vertical lines randomly and the finished look is great. Here’s what the tape looked like before she started painting:

completed taping for diy backsplash project - Beautiful Painted Back Splash DIY Project 9 930x592 - Affordable DIY Backsplash – Mosaic Tile Paint Project

Step 4: Prime again.

The homeowner suggests that you paint over the tape with your primer. This helps the tape bond a bit better to the wall and create a tighter paint line for the tile.

Step 5: Paint the tiles!

Most mosaic tile sheets use random colors placed in no particular order but it’s completely up to you to decide how you want the colors to be. Take a close look at your favorite mosaic tile sheet examples and simply copy the colors. A practice run on paper can help you decide on color placement too.

At least 2 or 3 coats of paint should be enough coverage for the project. Below you can see the homeowners in the process of painting.

Step 6: Remove the tape before the paint dries.

The homeowner strongly recommends that you finish the last coat of paint on the tiles and then remove the tape before it can completely dry. This will aid in creating a clean, straight line and keeps the tape from bonding too tightly to the wall.

Step 7: Once the paint is completely dry apply sealant.

A sealant is important so that the paint stays put and the wall is easy to clean. You’ll need to research to make sure you use the right kind of sealant for the type of walls you have. The homeowners used a standard polyurethane sealant.

This DIY project is perfect for those that want a unique backsplash without the expense and hassle of tiling. Believe it or not, tiling a backsplash is much more complicated than most think. You simply can’t just throw tile up on the wall!

By painting the backsplash onto your wall you can get the same look with only half the prep and a quarter of the cost and that’s assuming you have to buy new primer and paint. This is a great way to update your kitchen.

Mobile Home Interior Door Makeover

One of the biggest complaints of mobile homeowners is the laminated interior doors and cabinets found in a majority of homes. They are typically made of some kind of laminated fake ‘wood’ product with a shiny finish that can be bought for $59 at most mobile home parts stores. Yes, they are cheap but they have a lot of potential!

Minor details can make all the difference in a home. It’s amazing how much of a difference a little ingenuity can give your whole home. Here’s one creative homeowner’s idea for a mobile home interior door makeover. You’ll be amazed at the difference!

An Imgur user, cmcase, shared their step-by-step process for updating a standard interior door of her double wide. It’s a great way to give a door a whole new look at an affordable price!

Mobile Home Interior Door Makeover

Step 1: Clean, Clean, Clean

As with any painting project, the first step is to clean the entire area so that the paint and adhesive will bond tightly to the surface.  Some suggest cleaning laminated surfaces such as interior doors with a Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) solution but you can use anything as long it cuts grease and oil.

Step 2: Attach Paintable Wallpaper

Attach 2 equal-sized rectangles of a heavy-duty paintable wallpaper. The homeowner used Allen + Roth White Strippable Non-Woven Prepasted Paintable Wallpaper.

Of course, you can get creative and make the wallpaper any size you want but it should be square or rectangle so that the next step will be easy.

The homeowner used 17 1/4″ x 34 3/4″ sized panels with 3 1/4″ around each panel but keep in mind that wallpaper has a tendency to shrink a bit once it dries completely. She goes on to explain how she installed the wallpaper:

The wallpaper I used was pre-pasted, so I put it in the bathtub with a bit of water for 30 seconds, took it out, concertina folded it (fold the ends in paste side to paste side) and let it sit for 5 minutes (per the directions on the packaging). Then I unfolded the wallpaper, lined it up with my marks on the door, and smoothed it out. I used a plastic wallpaper smoother tool that I bought at Lowes to make sure all of the air bubbles were out, and I left it to dry for a few hours.

mobile home interior door-interior door makeover step-by-step 1 - interior door makeover step by step 1 787x1400 - Mobile Home Interior Door Makeover

Step 3: Add Trim Around the Wallpaper

You can use any type of trim you want! The homeowner used a half inch wide trim that came in 8-foot lengths and cut them at the same sized lengths of the wallpaper using a 45-degree angle on each end.  Sand the wood to a smooth finish then use a brad nailer with 3/4″ brads to tack the trim into place (or just a handy hammer but its hard to hammer into these doors because they aren’t solid, so keep that in mind).

Once the trim is up, use wood filler to cover the nail holes and smooth out any cracks.

mobile home interior door-interior door makeover step-by-step 2 - interior door makeover step by step 2 787x1400 - Mobile Home Interior Door Makeover

Step 4: Paint

Use sandpaper to smooth down any dried wood filler first and then paint the door, trim, and wallpaper in any color you want.  White is great for the popular cottage look. Primer plus paint is always a favorite for those of us that have painted mobile home interior doors and cabinets because it covers well and lasts a while.

mobile home interior door-interior door makeover step-by-step 3 - interior door makeover step by step 3 787x1400 - Mobile Home Interior Door Makeover

You can complete the interior mobile home door makeover by painting the hinges with a metal spray paint and adding a wider trim around the entire door. In all, you will have spent less than $30 (if you use leftover paint) to give your room a completely new look!

mobile home interior door-interior door makeover step-by-step 4 - interior door makeover step by step 4 787x1400 - Mobile Home Interior Door Makeover

Please keep in mind that its details like the laminated mobile home interior door that make manufactured homes so affordable. Buying an affordable home and updating the minor issues is a great way to have the home of your dreams without drowning in debt. Plus, you’re adding your own touches and style to a home and enjoying the fruits of your labor is a great feeling. Have fun!

Clayton’s Gen-Now Concept Home

I try to refrain from featuring a particular manufacturer or model here on Mobile Home Living. By remaining neutral and never accepted advertising from dealers or builders, I can put the readers first which has always been my first priority. However, when a company deserves a little pat on the back I don’t mind a bit to give it to them and this is one of those cases.

Clayton’s Gen-Now Concept Home is Impressive

Clayton Homes tried to bring more modern and environmentally friendly manufactured homes to the market a few years ago with the ihouse and ehouse. Unfortunately, the prices were a bit too much for the market to handle and they never caught on. Still, it was refreshing to see what the future may hold for manufactured home design.

Clayton’s Gen-Now Concept Home is a beautiful home. It’s sleek, modern design is a breath of fresh air. Much thought has obviously been put into the design. Clayton seems to understand how people use the space within their home well.

Here’s the press release from Clayton Homes:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (April 25, 2014) – Clayton Homes, the nation’s largest home builder*, will unveil its new Concept House at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting on May 3, 2014, in Omaha, Neb. The Concept House, which reinvents the way homeowners live in their homes, was designed to suit the specific interests and lifestyles of the 19 – 37 age group (Gen Now) and reinvents traditional floor plans to accommodate “larger living.”

By 2020, the housing market will consist of more first-time homeowners than ever before. With 92 million Gen Now consumers enter the market. The Gen Now group challenges the norm, embraces individuality and perceives the home as a personal reflection. The design of Clayton Homes’ Concept House is based on extensive research and insight into Gen Now and represents the innovative details that this generation looks for in their homes. Its aesthetics include cool and trendy elements, while its spaces offer flexible rooms, useful areas, and built-in storage. Rooms are designed to evolve and grow with the homeowner over time and adapt to changing needs.

Included in the Concept House are Smart Points, Clayton Homes’ collection of features and technologies that provide unexpected conveniences, such as a recharging station for electronics, sliding barn doors that transform spaces, unique storage areas, and modern design elements

“We have spent a lot of time learning about Gen Now in order to create a home that truly represents it,” said Kevin Clayton, CEO of Clayton Homes. “Our designers have put careful thought and attention into supplementing this generation’s lifestyle throughout the home. We constantly focus on innovation, and we wanted to create a home that would meet the needs of this impactful age group.”

Clayton’s Gen-Now Concept Home Marketing Fails

I’m not a big fan of the way Clayton Home’s markets themselves. This home is an example of why I have reached that opinion over the last couple of years. It seems that they fail to understand exactly who their customers are time and time again.

“The Concept House, which reinvents the way homeowners live in their homes, was designed to suit the specific interests and lifestyles of the 19 – 37 age group (Gen Now). It reinvents traditional floor plans to accommodate “larger living.”

Was it really necessary to tag this home to a particular age range or generation? I understand they want to market to the first-time buyers that will be hitting the market in the next few years. But, why not market their products to all potential buyers instead of a select few? I’m over the age range they stated above but I love this home, it’s exactly the type of manufactured home I would want to buy if I ever decided to buy a new one (and we have been seriously thinking about it, to be honest). It’s a small pet peeve and I’m not offended by it. But it is yet another example of the company failing to truly understand who their buyers are. I wish they would stop trying to appeal to one small group and market to all of us!

Still, it’s a nice home with a great deal of thought put into the design and I appreciate that. If they do produce these homes on a mass scale and at an affordable price, and I hope they do, I’m sure it will be a success.

  • Use white or light colors as the backdrop. Light, fresh, and airy is a great way to describe the beach cottage style and white or light colors can help achieve the look effortlessly.
  • Decor such as signs made with worn wood, glass with rope elements, and seashells are the go-to decorations for the beach cottage style. Pairing like objects together can make a beautiful display for any room.

  • Keep clutter and decor to a minimum. You want the room to portray the beach which is minimal itself.
  • Put the focus on one element per room. A sofa in a great beach color or a beautiful table along with a few beach-themed decorations is a perfect combination for the beach cottage style.
  • A barn door is a space saver for small bathrooms in narrow mobile home hallways. It’s a popular replacement for the standard interior door and it works well for any style but particularly the beach cottage style. This mobile home has combined worn wood with a great sea blue color.

For $210,000 you can own this gorgeous home. Now, this may seem like a lot but for the location, its a bargain – site-built homes go for at least double in that area.

The listing states the home started out as a trailer and was remodeled in 2003 with “wood flooring, granite counters, bead board, crown molding, wainscoting, custom tiled baths, recessed lighting, custom cabinetry and much more.”  It comes completely furnished, too!

It also offers a wrap around deck overlooking the community park. There are no HOA fees and the home sits on leased land with a 10-year lease renewal available.

Bathroom Inspiration

The bathrooms are my favorite because of the custom tile work.

From floor to ceiling, the tile is used perfectly and the finished room is spectacular. They focused on the major aspects of the room, the floor, and shower, to create the focal point in tile.

Beadboard is used to cover the walls which is smart – if there is ever any plumbing issues it’s a lot easier to replace a piece of a board than custom tile work.

Indoor Gardening in a Manufactured Home

You can grow flowers, fruits, vegetables, succulents, and herbs right on your wall or in containers and use functional indoor gardening in a manufactured home!

Your space can be utilized in such a way that your home smells amazing and you have your favorite fresh herbs on hand whenever you need them. It takes a little bit of planning, a little bit of work, and a lot of love and cultivation but when you’re finished, the design will be better than you imagined.

Planning Your Garden

What do you want to grow? Most flowers and herbs can be cultivated in small pots that can be placed pretty much anywhere that there is sun, but some of them need larger space and have to eventually be moved outside. Research the types of plants that you want to grow before you purchase seeds and potting soil so that you don’t end up with plants that die in pots that are too small for them. In your research, find out which plants need the most sun so that you can place them strategically to get the nutrients that they need. If your home doesn’t get that enough sun, you can purchase grow lamps to place near the plants so that they receive sun. Learn how to design a successful indoor garden here. Click here for a great guide to indoor gardening from Living Simple.

Shelving and Potting

It’s likely that your walls are not naturally equipped to hold potted plants. Therefore, you’ll have to put up shelves or get window boxes that work with your manufactured home decor. When it comes to potting your plants, you don’t have to use only regular pots sold in garden stores. You can use mason jars, water bottles, and virtually anything else that will hold soil and water. If your plants require drainage, you’ll have to drill holes in the bottom of the containers and provide drainage trays to catch any excess water.

Vertical Gardening

Vertical gardening has gotten very popular recently. Living walls are a great way to introduce greenery into your home. You can grow herbs, grasses, and succulents fairly easy with a vertical container. Some people use plastic or cloth bags that have been modified a bit but there’s also kits you can purchase.

Soda Bottles

Soda bottles are a very affordable way to add plants to a wall. Just cut out a large hole in the side of the bottle and tighten the lid. Add soil and the plants and water!

Pockets

As stated above you can use old purses for your plants, just fill with soil and add plants. You can hang them using the straps or attach them in rows on the wall (use the studs cause it may get a bit heavy when the dirt is wet). You would have to be careful when watering, you wouldn’t want to over-water. If you are using cloth you may want to add a waterproofing to the wall.

SeasonalWisdom.com has a great collection of vertical gardening ideas. Below is an example of purses being used as planters:

Rain Gutters

Rain Gutters can be used in vertical gardening. You can attach them to a wall or hang them from the ceiling. You’ll need to grow plants with shallow root systems but there’s plenty of those that grow well indoors and outdoors.

Here’s a great idea using basic plant containers. You could find a merchandise display and modify it or just use some lumber to build a shelf to hold the containers.

Being Practical

Flowers are very pretty and can accent your manufactured home decor in many ways, but an indoor garden is also a great way to plant practical things that you may need for cooking or to filter the air. Plants cleanse the air naturally. Many kinds of herbs can be grown indoors and you can pick them fresh as you need them. Think about herbs that you’d like to use more often but have been too expensive or difficult to find in the past. You can plant these for regular use right in your home.

You can use leaf cuttings from a succulent to save even more money.

Patience, Patience, Patience

No matter what you try to grow, be aware that it will take time. The research and planning that you do are only the beginning. Your seedlings may take some time to yield usable herbs or sprout the flowers that the pictures portray on the seed packets. It’s important to remember that this doesn’t happen overnight and you shouldn’t give up after only a couple of weeks. Give your garden time to grow and you’ll be happy when it does.

Mobile Home Decor – Smart Shelving Space

When you have a small space, every square inch counts and using that space efficiently gives you more options for utilizing it. There are many ways that you can do this in every area of your mobile home decor and give each room more use than you ever thought possible.

Shelves are Not Just for Books

Shelving units come in many shapes and sizes. They’re good for things other than books and figurines. You can use these tools for storing clothing, shoes, kitchen items, and everything else that you can think of. Get creative with the shelving units that you choose!

  • Use shelves in your bedroom for shoes and bags instead of letting them pile up in corners or taking up room in your closet. You can install them underneath windows, on closet doors, and underneath the bed if there is enough space between it and the floor.

  • Get creative with the shelving units in your living area. Install them underneath tables or couches, given that there is enough room between them and the floor. Use these handy shelves to store home office supplies and computer equipment.

  • Shelves in the kitchen can utilize space even more than cabinets and they also allow you to display decorative kitchen items proudly. You can also install shelves under the kitchen window or near the sink for easy access to spices and cleaning supplies for the dishes.

Hidden Spaces in Mobile Home Decor

Drawers and cabinets can be strategically hidden so that your manufactured mobile home decor is not interrupted and your space seems bigger than it is. With less cabinet and drawer handles and doors showing, the illusion of a bigger space is achieved.

  • Use drawers in the kitchen underneath island counters or dining tables for utensils and other useful tools. Not only does this help storage, but it will also keep these tools handy right where you need them to be.

  • If you can’t fit shelving units underneath your bed or living area couch, drawers are an excellent alternative. They can be easily hidden and hold many items that need organizational help.

  • Drawers don’t have to slide out. They can slide horizontally as well. A bookshelf can turn into a number of drawers when slid into a wall and hidden. You’ll be utilizing space as well as improving your décor.

Kitchen Cabinets - mobile home decor - mobile home decor using space efficiently - Mobile Home Decor – Smart Shelving Space

Mobile Home Decor for Outdoor Storage

Your manufactured mobile home decor extends to the outdoors as well. You can add shelving units and drawers to the decor outside your home and create extra storage that is also well hidden. This is an excellent place to store gardening equipment and fold away patio furniture for safety as well as aesthetics.

Get Some Help

All of these creative options can work for your space but creative can also mean expensive and dangerous projects. Before you undergo any kind of renovation, consult a professional and do some research. You won’t be able to enjoy your space if you sustain injury from trying to create it. Enjoy creating your space as much as you love spending time in it. Don’t be afraid to get help if it seems that you need it. Be safe with your projects.

1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

Please welcome Dianna Wood.

Dianna has completely remodeled a vintage single wide mobile home with amazing DIY projects and was kind enough to write a bit about her single wide mobile home here on Mobile Home Living
By Dianna Wood
Mobile Home Owner at Mobile Country Club, Rancho Cordova, California

Let’s face it, anyone who has enough money, or who don’t mind getting deeper in debt, can turn an old, tired, mobile home into a beautiful place by simply gutting it and installing all new everything. That is not what we did and frankly, that is not who we are. We wanted to enhance and restore as much of what was already there as possible, and to use what we already had in the way of furnishings. This type of renovation takes a lot of planning and a lot of late nights laying in bed and visualizing all the possibilities.

painted wall project in vintage mobile home - painted wall project in vintage mobile home - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

Of course, this type of renovation requires a great deal more creativity, ingenuity, and hard work then the “gut and replace” remodel; and yet, it is so much more rewarding. Why? Primarily because the end result will be a less expensive; one-of-a-kind, living space, like no other, rather than a cookie cutter, model home. It will simply have more character and, I believe, be so much more beautiful, interesting and functional.

STEP ONE – ANALYSIS

The key to a successful mobile home remodel DIY project is analysis. When you take the time to really analyze the space before any work begins you will save time, money, and aggravation.

We began by measuring all the rooms and all the space within each room and taking pictures of just about every angle of every room and every space within each room; printing out those pictures and writing the dimensions onto the black and white print-outs.

Part of the continued analysis was to take measurements of all of our existing furniture in order to determine where it would fit. In a small home, there are very few options and we did not want to finish renovating only to discover that half of our furniture was not going to work—or spending a weekend moving furniture around 359 times until something worked out. A “to scale” floor plan was created for each room with “to scale” furniture pieces. As a result of this analysis, we realized that if we were going to be able to keep and use our three 7 foot high oak bookcases, we would need to close off and panel over windows in the living room.

See 15 Great Mobile Home Remodels here.

STEP TWO – THINK ESSENTIALS

This is where the scaling down takes place. Decide what is absolutely essential and also what you can live without. What do you really need to enjoy a living space? What is practical, functional and comfortable? We have all been in homes where things look wonderful; but, living in the space simply doesn’t work. It’s not functional.

Also, decide what you can salvage and use for something else or somewhere else—shelves, mirrors, curtain rods, hardware, doors, etc.

vintage mobile home before remodel - vintage mobile home before remodel - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

We had three huge solid oak bookcases and a solid oak desk that we needed to fit into this space. Therefore, after removing the mirror, the window covering and hardware, we also sealed and closed off the windows on the carport side. In small spaces, going up for storage is always the solution and it can add a great deal of interest to a room.

floor after being painted in vintage mobile home - floor after being painted in vintage mobile home - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty MakeoverWe used our existing clip-on desk lights for lighting above the other window and created a built-in library space on the entire carport side wall. The biggest project in this room was pulling the carpet and hand painting the plywood sub-flooring.

Details of that project can be found here: http://www.hometalk.com/3482198/a-1964-single-wide-make-over-hand-painted-sub-flooring

As I looked around the space, I knew I needed something bold and tall on the other side of the room to balance the space and yet had no room for additional furniture so I decided to use paint! That is where the “Word” theme started and what ultimately set the theme for the home.

KITCHEN BEFORE:

Challenges here included a 50-year-old Wedgewood built-in oven that was no longer (safely) functional and the space for it was too small for a new built-in oven to be installed; the range top also had to go, simply because it had died. In addition, there was no room for a kitchen table and the light fixtures were old and the light switches were worn out. But, we could live with everything else: the original cabinets, sink, counter, and vinyl flooring. So, we concentrated on what we needed to add and how to best use the space, functionally.

First, we took apart a solid oak corner desk with hutch and used all the pieces to build a desk and hutch around the existing kitchen window utilizing the different sections of the corner unit. We created a breakfast bar using the glass top from an old Scandinavian coffee table that someone had discarded at the side of a dumpster, by mounting it to the skinny existing split counter and adding two bar stools. We also replaced the range top and the light fixtures and of course a fresh coat of paint.

BEFORE

kitchen after remodel in vintage mobile home - kitchen after remodel in vintage mobile home - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

I remounted the oven top above the cubby holes to retain the retro feel and used the cubby holes for my very functional glass jars. It broke my heart to have to pull that Wedgewood.

The new light fixtures were a splurge. It was tough spending $99 a piece – But it was made easier after we received a gift card for Lowe’s as a housewarming gift and I won another Lowe’s gift card at a luncheon. Are these perfect or what?

BATHROOM

This room was the biggest challenge. I hated the color of the sink and the tub and the apricot had to go! The tub was a disaster and the shower didn’t work. I removed all the mirrors (there were three) stripped the trim, primed and painted and then tiled the backsplash and the countertops with glass mosaic tile.

bathroom before remodel in vintage mobile home - bathroom before remodel in vintage mobile home - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

I was able to tie in the sink color with the bamboo matted pictures and the woven baskets. Phew! That was a total relieve since we really could not afford a new sink and bathtub. We were really trying to retain everything that was functional.

remodeling the bathroom in vintage mobile home - remodeling the bathroom in vintage mobile home - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

We had a black framed mirror that had hung in our apartment that was the perfect size for a “new vanity mirror.

BEDROOM BEFORE

painted and remodeled vintage single wide bedroom - painted and remodeled vintage single wide bedroom - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

Let me start out by saying “People who paint over drawer pulls and cabinet hardware should be shot!” Yes, the hardware had been painted over not once—not twice, but three times and there were 29 pieces not to mention the original copper screws. Can you imagine the cost of replacing all this hardware—even at Home Depot?

cabinet hardware - cabinet - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

So, we spent 5 hours stripping the hardware and look what we found underneath all those layers of paint.

The real bonus was the great built-in’s—all solid hardwood and in great condition. The only furniture necessary in this room would be our bed—which is a good thing since the room was only 10’ X11’. Again the key was going up for storage. I used 4 corner units that we already had and mounted them from the ceiling to the wall on both sides of the bed. I also was able to use the little white boxes that were originally mounted on either side of the kitchen window.

Picture frames were used as window coverings and of course, carried the “WORD” theme into the bedroom as well.

GARDEN

painted fence project - remodeled single wide mobile home - painted fence project remodeled single wide mobile home - 1964 Mobile Home Gets a Crafty Makeover

We also decided to carry the “Word” theme out into the garden and still have more work to do on the patio. But, all and all, after two months it is finally livable!

Conclusion

Our desire in sharing with the reader is with the hope of inspiring others to enhance what is already there and use what you all ready have—those who want to think creatively about the existing space; and their “stuff” and how to merge the two into something that is uniquely theirs that is affordable, beautiful, and functional.

Now, give up that mansion, find a cute little single wide mobile home, and get busy!

Manufactured Home Decorating Ideas – Modern Cottage Style

Ready for some more beautiful manufactured home decorating ideas? Great, cause you’re gonna love this home!

This double wide manufactured home was found on HGTV’s Rate my Space, one of the few online resources for manufactured home decorating ideas, and it’s another fine example of the unlimited potential that a manufactured home has.

Kitchen

Stacy, the owner, has decorated this Las Vegas manufactured home with a cozy modern cottage style and it works wonderfully in the space. The muted cream base with bright white accents is a perfect combination of the popular style.

The cottage style typically consists of a light color palette accented with a touch of dark, natural textures, and accent colors. This interior design style works especially well in a smaller manufactured home because the light wall color allows natural light to bounce and reflect freely – making the space seem larger.

Mixing old world country charm with new world modern style is another great idea for manufactured home kitchen decor. The white cabinetry and tiled counters are indicative of the old world style and the stainless steel is entirely modern, but together it works wonderfully to create a beautiful cottage decor style.

A natural goldenrod color is a perfect choice for the family room walls because it allows the white furniture and decor to take center stage. The cottage decor style is most known for using white decor and furniture pieces in the spaces. The light paint color creates a soothing background and a few pops of blues and browns work great as accent colors.
