Living the Dream

This couple did what some only dream of doing; got out of debt. They sold their stick built home and paid cash for the manufactured home and had enough left over for this magnificent renovation. They are living a ddebt-freelifestyle in perfect style!
Great use of color, material and decor combine to make this a one of a kind. Itnever ceases to amaze me what talented people can do with their homes!
As promised, Melodie was kind enough to answer a few questions for us. If you’re about to start your own remodel or update, you’ll want to read this.

The Interview

Here are a few questions that Melodie kindly answered for us.

What year/model if the home?

1995 Palm Harbor

What were the biggest decisions you had to make when planning the remodel?

Which wood flooring we wanted to use. There are so many choicesaboutut there that I had a hard time deciding.

What was the hardest part of the remodel?

I would have to say the floors, because it was a lot of being on our knee’s and that not so easy anymore.

How did you choose the flooring? Is the kitchen and bath tile or laminate?

Everything is a wood laminate except the kitchen and bathrooms which are a sticky back vinyl. I put luan board down in the master-bath, so that it would have a smooth finish. The kitchen and hall bath floors had a smooth finish, so I just laid it right over top.

What products, procedure did you use to paint the cabinets? Any advice or tips?

I took Geneva’s advice from My Hearts Song blog and and used a bonding primer first from Lowe’s and then I painted them white. The base I brushed but the doors we used a sprayer and that saved us a ton of time.

What made you decide on this home? layout, price?

I would have to say both…we loved the open floor plan and the price was also right.

What advice would you give someone looking to live debt free?

Each case is going to be so different that it would be hard to say. Definitely sit down and write out a plan. Selling our site built home and buying a manufactured home, so that we wouldn’t have a mortgage is a choice we made. Choosing a manufactured/mobile home is definitely affordable living and it cut out a huge expense from our budget.

What were your original thoughts about manufactured homes?

I guess I was more curious about what could be done to them so that our home could be what we wanted it to be. There are things that are different but for the most part, I found that you could do almost anything.

What have you learned about manufactured homes that you’d like others to know?

That they make a great place to call home. We had a storm that hit with high winds and our house didn’t even budge…I really expected to feel something, but I truly didn’t feel a thing. It felt really safe!
Thank you, Melodie, for allowing us into your home and for sharing your thoughts about manufactured homes. There is very little difference between a stick built home and a manufactured home. You can easily turn your home into a beautiful space and Melodie has certainly proven that without a doubt.
Melanie just started a blog called Our Cottage on Lot 56. It has lots more information about their home, be sure to check it out!
