36 Primitive Country Decor Crafts for your Home

Country primitive is popular for a reason. If you’re going for a homey welcoming feel in your home then primitive country style is definitely for you. Primitive country decor makes use of worn items that look as if it has been handed down through the generations. Most of the decor items we associate with the trend were everyday things used back in ‘the good ole days,’ when things weren’t so cheap and, well, plastic.

Handmade and natural were once required in our everyday lives and even preferred over store-bought. Primitive country brings that time and way of life back, if only in decor. It gives a gracious nod to the simple life and a time when reducing, reusing, and recycling was a way-of-life, not just a slogan.

This guide to primitive country decor can help you create a welcoming and stylish primitive country themed home.

    Primitive Country Decor – A to Z

We’ve found dozens of great country primitive decor ideas that are affordable to buy or easy enough to create yourself. We’ll cover the definitions of primitive country decor and how it differs from shabby-chic, the best color palettes, the most popular decor items, affordable DIY crafts, and show you beautiful room inspirations.

What Does ‘Primitive Country’ Mean Exactly?

The term ‘primitive’ can include many different things. Ask 10 people to describe primitive country or prim country for short and you’ll likely get 10 different answers.  There are certain words that are often used, those include:

    • Simple
    • Crude
    • Unrefined
    • Worn
    • Unsophisticated
    • Rural

The website, Goodbye City Life, has their own definition if primitive decor, “primitive decorating is part flea market finds, part shabby chic, part ‘make-do” and we think that is a perfect description.

Wikipedia defines primitive decorating as a style of decorating using primitive folk art style that is characteristic of a historic or early Americana time period, typically using elements with muted colors and a rough and simple look to them…….designed to have an old or antique look but created using new materials. Examples of antiquing techniques used by primitive folk artists include tea or coffee staining and sanding down paint to create a worn, aged look. The style is sometimes referred to as country style.

What is the Difference Between Primitive Country and Shabby Chic, Americana, Rustic, Vintage, and Farmhouse Styles?

The Carver Junk Company has a great article titled Primitive, Rustic, Antique, Vintage – What’s the Difference? that puts the different styles in a better perspective.

The following descriptions best fit each term:

Primitive country is defined as the most simple of designs, a truly homemade piece made by mostly untrained artists. Carver Junk Company shows their definition of primitive versus rustic with the following images of furniture.

    Primitive vs Rustic Furniture Styles

Notice the primitive style furniture is very simple with basic construction. The rustic style piece has a more complex construction though it has been made to look old.

    Barn Stars or Pennsylvania Stars

Barn stars used in primitive country decor

Crudely shaped, elongated 5-point barn stars are used extensively in primitive country decor. The shapes originated as markings of the barn builders, a kind of primitive logo, that was hung on barns.  MetalBarnStars.com reveals the history of barn stars:

The meaning of metal barn stars in Amish country can be traced back to the 1700’s, and to at least the 1820’s in Pennsylvania. On many older barns one could see a large decoration in the shape of a star mounted on the face of the barn that represented the trademark of a specific barn builder.

Meanings of Color Used on Barn Star

From there they were used as decorations that many thought could bring luck, much like a horseshoe, and meanings were attached to the color of barn star you used:

Black: Used for protection. Black is sometimes used for binding or blending elements together.

Red: Red is used to show emotion. These emotions can include passion, charisma, lust, and creativity.

White: Normally used to show purity. Describes energy of the moon and allows energy to flow freely.

Blue: Blue has several meanings varying mostly by the shade used. Examples would include protection, peace, calmness, and spirituality.

Green: Green is used to show growth, fertility, and success. Used also to stimulate ideas and dreams to grow.

Yellow: Show health in body and mind. Love of man and sun. Connection to god.

Brown: Used to show connection to mother earth. Variations in meaning could also indicate brown to mean friendship and strength.

Orange: Gives added energy to projects or matters needing an extra push. Gives abundance in career.

Violet: Gives protection or signifies something sacred.

  • Simple Living in a Country Chic Mobile Home

Jason and Lauren Wellbaum are living a life that many have only dreamed about. They have a beautiful country chic mobile home that’s paid off sitting on 20 acres with a barn and a few barnyard friends to go with it. They are living a simple life that a lot of us can only dream about.

The most remarkable thing about the Wellbaums is that they’ve managed to accomplish this cozy simple living well before 40. Usually, younger couples are busy trying to keep up with the Jones but Jason and Lauren have done the exact opposite. After seeing their country chic mobile home you’ll agree that they’re living their best simple life in style.

Of course, easy living isn’t always easy to get. A few hard decisions had to be made to get this simple life in Honey Hollow.

From Cramped Cabin to Country Chic Mobile Home

Jason and Lauren purchased 20 acres of rugged woodlands in Central Illinois shortly after they were married. The property held a few outbuildings and a one-room cabin that they lived in for the first four years of their marriage. It was tough living in the 500 square foot rustic cabin but they were saving a ton of money and planned to either remodel the cabin or build a new home altogether. Two years after moving in they welcomed their first child and suddenly 500 square feet got a lot smaller.

The original plan was to renovate and remodel the structure into an authentic country cabin that was big enough to house a growing family. After a few quotes, they realized expanding the cabin wasn’t realistic. They started looking into other housing choices for their property and ultimately decided on a 1985 model single wide with 2 bedrooms and one bath.

It took six months to find the right home at the right price. Jason and Lauren purchased a 1985 Fairmont single wide in good condition (and with an end kitchen!) for $2500. Another $2500 got it transported and set up in the perfect spot on their land.

They bought it thinking they would just fix the subfloor and put in new flooring and paint but they ended up gutting it, rewiring parts of it, and totally renovating the interior.

Primitive Country Interior During Remodel 1

Ultimately, it took three years to complete the mobile home remodel. Halfway through renovating the Wellbaums found out they were expecting their second child so they took a break from remodeling for a bit.

While their country chic mobile home is only 980 square feet Lauren says it feels so much bigger.

You can see the single wide was gutted down to the studs and new drywall and a cool tin ceiling was installed.

Lauren told me the used tin was found at a very affordable rate and she couldn’t help but think it was a perfect material to replace mobile home ceilings. I agree 100%!

Primitive Country Sink And Countertop Build

    What’s your proudest DIY moment?

Our countertops! We found rainbow poplar project slabs meant for crafting or making small shelves at Menards. I fell in love with the colors and scoured Pinterest for tutorials on DIY countertops. Jason worked so many hours on those counters and was terrified they wouldn’t turn out but they are perfect! We have around 150 dollars in them, we used a gift card we got for Christmas!

What was your biggest challenge while renovating?

We had a lot of challenges. We had difficulty finding and keeping an electrician in our area. My husband redid the water lines and reinsulated under the mobile home which was a HUGE undertaking. The metal ceilings were tricky to put up. And the flooring was terribly hard to put together.

Do you have a favorite room in the home?

Probably the main living area. I love my kitchen. I’ve always dreamed of having a copper sink. I love my fireplace. I have the rocking chair I’ve always wanted (and gave it a makeover for only $5).

Do you know what the total cost of your renovation is?

$5000 for the mobile home and the transport costs
    $2500 for a new roof
The rest we aren’t calculating it all up because it will probably give my husband a stroke but probably around 15 grand. Some things were gifts such as my sink and the appliances.

    Conclusion

It’s apparent the smart couple has put a lot of love and time into their home. I’m not sure which is more commendable – the fact they followed their own path without caring what anyone thought or the fact that they have such a beautiful home at such an affordable price.

To have a beautiful home that is paid for on 20 acres at such a young age really says a lot about this couple.

When I asked Lauren if she had any other information she’d like to share she said no but went on to say, “We are just thankful to have a home we are comfortable and happy in. It’s all about perspective.” I think that says it all.

As always, thank you for reading Mobile Home Living!

The sink was gifted to Lauren but Jason made the countertop using wood found at Menards.

The primitive decor has been a popular style for decades, centuries even. It’s especially popular here in West Virginia! Every time I walk into a house that’s decorated in the country I immediately feel at home. Primitive is a style that focuses on worm and welcoming. Primitive applauds imperfection and strives to make new look old.

This is my good friend Susan Lanham’s kitchen. She lives in double-wide manufactured home in Fayetteville, WV, an area with a proud history of country living.

Her primitive kitchen decor is a great representation of the style.

Popular primitive items are carefully used throughout the kitchen and dining room. Gingham curtains, black iron chandelier, antique window frames, cloth dolls, and warm colors are popular ‘must-haves’ in the primitive style.

    Primitive Gray Kitchen Cabinets

My favorite part of her home is the gray kitchen cabinets. I love them!

The darker cabinet color fits well into her primitive decor. This is a prime example of not being scared to use color in your home. The dark gray sets a strong base for the rest of the space and creates a perfect focal point.

Susan’s entire home is in the primitive country theme. She has done a fabulous job of distinguishing each room yet keeping them cohesive in decor.

The kitchen, dining and laundry room walls are all painted the same creamy medium-light brown and gives the entire area a flow that otherwise couldn’t be accomplished. The flooring is the same throughout as well.

  • Patriotic Decor Ideas for Manufactured Homes

I’ve been holding on to this patriotic manufactured home for a couple of months and it’s been killing me! I knew it would be better to save for the 4th so I patiently waited.

I’m so excited to share this home! This double wide exterior is perfectly patriotic but the kitchen is just as awesome.

The right front porch on a mobile or manufactured home can make a huge difference in curb appeal. It’s one of the quickest ways to make a factory-built home look more like a site-built home. Unfortunately, a new covered porch with added details like the window and the shake siding isn’t cheap but it sure is beautiful!

If you have the budget or can add a few unique details like the shake siding on the gable or the window. and a truly unique kitchen. I’ve also gathered a few affordable patriotic decor ideas that you can use to decorate your own manufactured home.

You could call this style romantic farmhouse or perhaps antique farmhouse or just absolutely gorgeous.

Someone asked Maureen if her beautiful kitchen was hard to keep clean. Both she and I think white kitchens are easier to keep clean than dark colors.

I painted the bottom cabinets in our house a black thinking they would be easier to keep clean (or look clean). Boy, was I wrong! Yes, white is hard to keep clean but black seems to show everything even worse.
