  • Bring Life to Your Mobile Home Kitchen: Vibrant Ways to Add Color

There’s no reason why your mobile home kitchen can’t be colorful and vibrant. With a little creativity and some inspiration, you can transform your small kitchen into a lively and inviting space. Adding a pop of color to your kitchen can change the entire look and feel of the room, making it more welcoming and enjoyable. From painting the cabinets and walls to adding colorful accessories and decor, these tips will inspire you to bring some life into your mobile home kitchen.

The Importance of Adding Color to Your Mobile Home Kitchen

Adding color to your mobile home kitchen is crucial in creating a vibrant and inviting space. The kitchen is often the heart of the home, where meals are prepared, memories are made, and conversations flow. It’s essential to make this space visually appealing and enjoyable to spend time in.

Colors have a profound impact on our emotions and can greatly influence our moods. Incorporating vibrant hues into your mobile home kitchen can instantly uplift your spirit and create a lively atmosphere. Whether you opt for bold and vibrant shades or subtle pops of color, adding color can completely transform the look and feel of your kitchen.

Not only does color enhance the aesthetic appeal of your mobile home kitchen, but it also adds personality and character to the space. It allows you to express your unique style and create a kitchen that reflects your individuality. Whether you prefer a modern and sleek look or a cozy and eclectic vibe, adding color can help you achieve the desired ambiance.

Furthermore, adding color to your mobile home kitchen can also make it appear more spacious and open. Lighter shades can create an illusion of a larger space, while darker colors can add depth and dimension. Additionally, incorporating contrasting colors can add visual interest and create a dynamic and eye-catching kitchen design.

Choosing the Right Color Palette For Your Kitchen

Choosing the right color palette for your mobile home kitchen can make a significant impact on its overall aesthetic and atmosphere. The right colors can bring life and vibrancy to the space, making it feel inviting and visually appealing. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect color palette:

    1. Consider the size and layout of your kitchen: If your mobile home kitchen is small, using light and neutral colors can help create an illusion of space and make it appear larger. On the other hand, if you have a spacious kitchen, you can experiment with bolder and brighter colors.

    2. Think about the mood you want to create: Different colors evoke different emotions. For a cheerful and energetic atmosphere, you can opt for warm and vibrant colors like red, orange, or yellow. If you prefer a calm and soothing ambiance, cool colors such as blue, green, or purple can be a great choice.

    3. Take inspiration from your surroundings: Consider the existing colors in your mobile home or the surrounding environment. You can choose a color palette that complements or contrasts with these elements. For example, if you have natural wooden cabinets, earthy tones like beige or brown can create a harmonious look.

    4. Use color psychology: Colors have the power to influence our moods and behaviors. Research color psychology to understand the impact different colors can have. For instance, blue is often associated with calmness and productivity, while red can stimulate appetite and create a lively atmosphere.

    5. Create a cohesive look with a color scheme: Select a primary color as the base of your color scheme and then choose complementary or contrasting colors to create a cohesive and visually appealing look. You can also incorporate different shades and tones of the chosen colors to add depth and dimension.

Painting the Walls: Colors That Make a Statement

When it comes to bringing life to your mobile home kitchen, one of the most impactful ways to add color is by painting the walls. By opting for bold and vibrant colors, you can create a space that truly makes a statement.

Gone are the days of plain, neutral-colored walls. Embrace your creativity and choose colors that reflect your personality and style. Consider using shades such as fiery red, sunny yellow, or deep ocean blue to infuse energy and liveliness into your kitchen.

If you’re hesitant about painting all the walls in a bold color, you can also opt for an accent wall. Choose one wall as a focal point and paint it with a vibrant color that complements your kitchen decor. This will add visual interest and draw attention to that particular area.

Another option is to use color-blocking techniques. Divide your walls into sections and paint each section a different color. This technique adds a playful and modern touch to your kitchen, creating a dynamic and visually appealing space.

Before you start painting, make sure to properly prepare the walls by cleaning and priming them. This will ensure that the colors appear vibrant and true to their intended shades. Additionally, consider using high-quality paint that is specifically designed for kitchens, as it will be more resistant to moisture and stains.

Adding Colorful Backsplash Tiles to Brighten up the Space

One of the easiest and most impactful ways to bring life to your mobile home kitchen is by adding colorful backsplash tiles. A backsplash not only serves as a protective barrier against spills and splatters but also adds a pop of color and personality to your kitchen.

When choosing backsplash tiles, consider vibrant hues that complement your existing color scheme or create a striking contrast. Opt for bold and eye-catching shades like vibrant blues, fiery reds, sunny yellows, or lush greens to instantly liven up the space.

You can also play with different patterns and designs to further enhance the visual appeal of your backsplash. From geometric shapes to intricate mosaic patterns, there are numerous options available to suit your personal taste and style.

In addition to color, consider the material of the tiles. Ceramic, glass, and porcelain tiles are popular choices for backsplashes due to their durability and ease of maintenance. They are also available in a wide range of colors, finishes, and textures, allowing you to find the perfect match for your kitchen.

Once you’ve selected the ideal backsplash tiles, it’s time to bring them to life. Whether you choose to hire a professional or embark on a DIY project, the installation process is relatively straightforward. Ensure that the surface is clean and properly prepared before applying the tiles, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adhesive and grout application.

Incorporating Colorful Appliances for an Energetic Vibe

One of the most effective ways to bring life and vibrancy to your mobile home kitchen is by incorporating colorful appliances. By adding pops of bold and vibrant hues, you can create a playful and energetic vibe that will instantly uplift the mood of your kitchen space.

Consider investing in colorful appliances such as a bright red refrigerator or a turquoise stove. These eye-catching additions will not only serve their practical purpose but also serve as statement pieces that elevate the overall aesthetic of your kitchen. The vibrant colors will create a focal point and add a sense of fun and excitement to the space.

If you prefer a more subtle approach, you can opt for smaller appliances in vibrant shades. Toasters, blenders, and coffee makers are available in an array of colors that can complement your kitchen decor and add a touch of personality to your space. Play around with different color combinations to create a cohesive and harmonious look.

In addition to the visual appeal, colorful appliances can also be a great conversation starter when guests visit your home. They add a unique and unexpected element to your kitchen, making it a memorable and inviting space.

    Installing Vibrant Countertops

When it comes to adding color to your mobile home kitchen, one of the most impactful ways is by installing vibrant countertops. A colorful countertop can instantly become the focal point of your kitchen, adding a burst of energy and personality to the space.

There are various options to choose from when it comes to vibrant countertops. One popular choice is to go for a bold and eye-catching pattern. Consider countertops with intricate designs, such as geometric shapes or floral motifs. These patterns can bring a sense of fun and liveliness to your kitchen, making it a vibrant and inviting place to cook and gather.

If patterns aren’t your style, you can still achieve a vibrant look by opting for countertops in bright and bold colors. Think vibrant blues, fiery reds, sunny yellows, or lush greens. These colors can instantly uplift the atmosphere of your kitchen, creating a cheerful and energetic vibe.

Another option to consider is the use of unique materials for your countertops. For example, you can choose countertops made of recycled glass, which come in a wide array of colors and add a touch of eco-friendliness to your kitchen. Alternatively, you can opt for countertops made of natural stone with vibrant hues, such as granite or quartz in shades like emerald green or sapphire blue.

    mobile home kitchen countertops

Remember to consider the overall color scheme of your kitchen when choosing vibrant countertops. You want to ensure that the colors complement each other and create a cohesive look. If you have a more neutral color palette for your cabinets and walls, a vibrant countertop can serve as a striking focal point that ties the whole space together.

If you are considering a DIY redo of your current countertops try a product like countertop epoxy to give them a whole new look!

    Using Colorful Window Treatments

When it comes to adding color and life to your mobile home kitchen, don’t forget about the power of window treatments. Colorful curtains, blinds, or shades can not only enhance the style of your kitchen but also bring in natural light, making the space feel bright and inviting.

Consider opting for vibrant patterns or bold solid colors that complement the overall theme or color scheme of your kitchen. If your kitchen has a neutral color palette, you can choose window treatments in bold hues like sunny yellow, vibrant turquoise, or fiery red to create a striking focal point.

    mobile home kitchen window treatment

In addition to adding a pop of color, window treatments can also serve a functional purpose by controlling the amount of light and privacy in your kitchen. Sheer curtains or blinds can allow natural light to filter in while maintaining a level of privacy. Alternatively, you can opt for blackout curtains or opaque shades if you prefer to have more control over light and privacy, especially in the evenings or when you’re cooking.

Another creative idea is to mix and match different window treatments for a unique and eclectic look. You can combine curtains with blinds or shades to add depth and texture to your windows. Experiment with different patterns, textures, and colors to find the perfect combination that suits your style and brings life to your mobile home kitchen.

Adding Pops of Color Through Artwork and Wall Decor

Adding pops of color through artwork and wall decor is a fantastic way to inject vibrancy and personality into your mobile home kitchen. The artwork has the power to transform a space, and the kitchen is no exception.

Consider selecting artwork that complements the color scheme and style of your kitchen. If you have a neutral color palette, opt for bold and vibrant pieces that will create a striking contrast. On the other hand, if your kitchen already has a colorful theme, choose artwork that enhances and harmonizes with the existing colors.

In addition to traditional framed artwork, explore alternative options for adding color to your kitchen walls. Consider hanging decorative plates, vintage signs, or even a gallery wall of colorful dishware. These unique and unconventional choices can add a playful and eclectic touch to your kitchen.

Don’t limit yourself to just wall hangings – think outside the box and explore other ways to incorporate color through decor. Place vibrant ceramic vases or bowls on open shelves or countertops. Hang colorful tea towels or curtains that can be easily changed to refresh the look of your kitchen.

Ultimately, the goal is to create a visually stimulating and inviting space that reflects your personal style. By carefully selecting and arranging artwork and wall decor, you can infuse your mobile home kitchen with charm, personality, and a delightful burst of color.

Your kitchen is the heart of your home, and adding vibrant colors can truly bring it to life. Whether you choose to paint your cabinets, add colorful accessories, or install a bold backsplash, there are endless possibilities to infuse your kitchen with personality and charm. • 33 Beautiful Backsplashes in Mobile Homes

Choosing the right backsplash is a lot easier when you can see exactly how it will look in your home. That’s why we’ve collected over 30 beautiful backsplashes in mobile homes only.

Installing a new backsplash can completely change the look of your kitchen. It’s also one of the best DIY projects for a beginner.

In addition to dozens of photos of backsplashes in mobile homes, we’ve found a few tips and resources to help you choose the right material for your backsplash and how to get the best results if you plan on installing it yourself.

    Glass Tile Backsplashes

Glass tiles are a great way to add color and sleekness to your kitchen walls. Like all tile, there are endless colors, designs, and sizes to choose from but they are more expensive than the ceramic and porcelain tiles.

A new trend in backsplashes is to install tile all the way to the ceiling and that’s exactly what this double wide manufactured homeowner has done.

Pattern Can Make all the Difference

The majority of tiled backsplashes you will see are in the stretcher bond or stack bond design. Changing the pattern of tile can give you an entirely new look for the backsplash. Add a different color of grout and you have even more design combinations to choose from. Play around and sample the designs on the floor to see which one you find most appealing and easy to install.

    Tile Backsplash Designs

This double wide for sale in California has gray cabinets that allow the small glitter backsplash to be the star of the show. Using the same tile on a small accent wall just makes it even better. Metallic tiles are a popular trend for bathrooms but it also works well for kitchens as you can see.

Tiles are available in a variety of sizes and colors that are a great option for a kitchen. Natural colors like gray, tan, and cream create a warm and inviting kitchen.

    Small Patterns are Best

Since the average height of a backsplash is only 18″ interior designers recommend using small patterns or pieces. American Tin Ceilings suggests using no more than a 6″ pattern so you get at least a 3 pattern vertical repeat. In the areas where you see more of the backsplash, like above the sink and stove, you’ll get more of a vertical repeat. This repeats will help make the space between the cabinet and counter appear higher which can make a small kitchen feel a little larger.

    Grout is Game-Changer

These next manufactured homes have subway tiles with contrasting grout. The first mobile home kitchen has white cabinets with a green tile and white grout that pulls it all together. FYI: Most tile experts recommend a minimum of 3/16″ grout joint size.

    Samples are Smart

Before changing the color of a room experts recommend you paint a large swatch on a wall and live with it for a week or two. You can also do the same with your backsplash. Most suppliers offer samples. If you are ordering materials online it’s especially smart to buy a few pieces to ensure the quality and colors are the same as the online photos.

    Patterned Tiles

This double wide was for sale in California. It’s a combination of several popular materials and styles. The backsplash is a floral design that follows the repeating vertical pattern trick mentioned above. At the highest distance between counter and cabinet, you can see 4 repeating patterns.

    Mosaic Tile

A mosaic is several smaller pieces of tile organized into a pattern or design.

Mosaics have been used since 3000 BC and they’ve been popular ever since because it’s cheap and easy to find broken tiles. The double wide below, found on HGTV’s old Rate my Space blog, is a perfect example of a mosaic tile backsplash design.

    Stone and Brick Backsplash Options

Brick has become one of the most popular backsplashes in mobile homes thanks to its diversity. You can use real stone as Chantal did in her beautiful double wide manufactured home below. She chose natural tan and brown bricks to give her kitchen texture and color. See the rest of Chantal’s home here.

    How to Install a Backsplash

It would be difficult to include how-to instructions for every type of backsplash mentioned here so I’m sharing the best resources I’ve found to help you get started on your research. Backsplashes Made with Paneling

Paneling comes in all kinds of designs, colors, and textures. Brick is a popular paneling style. Tileboard paneling, the sleek melamine covered MDF, is another one. Ashley used a standard red brick 4′ X 8′ paneling as the base of her beautiful farmhouse style mobile home kitchen backsplash. She then scraped drywall mud over the paneling to give it that worn weathered painted brick look. It’s affordable and easy to do. You can learn more about her backsplash on her Instagram here.

    Tileboard Paneling

Pam and her husband purchased an older single wide that had a white tile board backsplash. Tileboard comes in 4′ X 8′ sheets and is just MDF with a melamine coating on top that is designed to look like 4″ square tiles. It’s very affordable and usually used on bathroom and kitchen walls. Pam figured out how to paint her tileboard and she shared the process with us here.

    Beadboard Paneling

Metal and Tin Backsplashes in Mobile Homes

The greatest advantage to tin and metal backsplashes is the easy installation. All you really need are some cleaning supplies, tin snips, and liquid nail adhesive. Another advantage is the vast styles and designs available.

Looking to add some country charm to your kitchen? A cool choice that you might not have thought of, metal! Whether you go with corrugated metal or square tin tiles, either will make a statement in your kitchen.

    Popular Tin Backsplash Patterns

As we mentioned above, designers like to use smaller patterns for backsplashes, especially if the kitchen is small. For a typical 18″ backsplash the ideal pattern or tile size is 6″ or less. These eight tin tiles are technically for ceilings but they make a great backsplash as well.

    Copper Backsplashes are Unique

This is such a unique double wide mobile home kitchen I had to share it. The color combination of shiny copper and light sky blue is unusual but that’s what I like about it. It’s fun to be different!

    Facade Tile Backsplashes

A plastic facade backsplash would be perfect if you want the look of copper, stainless, metal, ceramic, or stone without the price. Facade tiles are usually made of thermoplastic which makes them affordable, thin, and easy to install.

The Hallmark Channel Home & Family Show had a segment about facade backsplashes that you can watch here.

Peel and Stick Backsplashes in Mobile Homes

Peel and stick tile backsplashes in mobile homes can also be considered facades but most of us just call them peel and stick tiles. You can find these 12″ X 12″ sheets in dozens of colors and designs at all the home improvement stores along with Amazon. Here are a few we found:

    Wood Backsplash Ideas

If you are really looking for a rustic or primitive country vibe for your kitchen, distressed pallet wood will be a great choice. You’d probably want to seal them really well but they look great and really pull a look together.

Ashley James has turned her 1997 Clayton double wide into a gorgeous farmhouse home. Her kitchen started with natural wood backsplash and then she painted it. New paint technology makes cleaning painted surfaces easier than it used to be.

This next single wide manufactured home kitchen was given a budget farmhouse makeover that is as unique as it is beautiful. The homeowner used an old picket fence as a backsplash. He also cut out the original mobile home cabinet doors and installed chicken wire to give it a true farmhouse look.

These three remodeling ideas to transform your mobile home kitchen are affordable and easy. Create a beautiful space you will want to spend time in without spending a ton of money.

    Marble Countertops without the Cost

If you like the look of granite or quartz this is a great project for you. Victoria shows how she gave her countertops the look of granite with a little paint and elbow grease. She shared her project on Hometalk.com.

Victoria cleaned, sanded, and then primed her original countertop first. She then swirled black and brown acrylic paint into white paint to give it that gorgeous granite look. Keep in mind this would probably work best if you have white or cream color countertops as a canvas. Sealing your newly painted counters is a great way to keep the look fresh for years. You can see her entire project here.

When money is tight, it’s hard to know where you should spend it to get the biggest bang. This remodel, featured here on Mobile Home Living, shows a few smart remodeling ideas to transform your mobile home kitchen.

To stay within budget, the homeowners did most of the work themselves and used a bit of creative thinking to get the look they wanted at the price they needed. They used sticky tile to keep labor to a minimum. Sticky tile is a great alternative to original tile. Now that the market has expanded the prices are down to $10 per square foot (it was $24.95 when it first came out).

Repainting cabinets and replacing the hardware is an inexpensive way to update a kitchen. Lowe’s has sets of 10 modern cabinet pulls for $29.95. You would be surprised how much new kitchen hardware can change the space.

Remodeling Ideas To Transform Your Mobile Home Kitchen – Total Transformation

We love this project because it took a typical dark and paneled single wide mobile home kitchen and transformed it into a kitchen any homeowner would like to have. This remodel came from Issaac at Hometalk. You can see the entire process here. Issaac removed the hutch that separated the kitchen and living room which opened up the space. Next, he removed the fronts of the cabinets and painted the cabinets a country white. To give the kitchen a real organic country style he used chicken wire in the centers of the upper cabinets. What a neat and affordable way to give your home a truly unique look.

  • How to Update Mobile Home Cabinets

There are a couple of things that ‘stand out’ about mobile home interiors. For instance, if you looked at two photos of kitchens, one being a mobile home, you’d probably know which one was a mobile home because of the cabinets (the notorious VOG wall panels are the other ‘stand out’).

Most mobile home cabinets are typically made with particle board or MDF that has a top layer made of paper, laminate, melamine, Thermofoil, or veneer.

In this article, we’ll share a few methods to repair damaged particle board and MDF along with tips for painting mobile home cabinets with different top layers.

Keep reading or click on the topic you’re most interested in:

    MDF and Common MDF Coatings

Though it has a bad reputation with mobile homeowners there’s nothing wrong with MDF.

Furniture and cabinet makers use MDF because it’s so smooth and dense and easy to work with. Plus, it makes use of construction waste and is usually more affordable than real wood. There’s a lot to like about MDF. All in all, it’s a great material but it has a couple of big downfalls: it doesn’t stand up to water very well at all and it doesn’t have a ‘grain’ like real wood.

Since MDF soaks up water like a sponge and doesn’t have a grain it needs a top layer adhered to give it both when used for cabinetry.

There is a lot of confusion about these top layers because the material can range from paper to plastic. That’s why it’s so important to know what your cabinets are coated with.

    Source: Thekitchenclassics.com

Particle board is NOT smooth because it’s made with sawdust and wood chips glued together into a sheet form. I’ve seen a few mobile homes with particle board cabinets but newer models will typically have MDF.

    Paper

In most mobile homes, the top layer is just a special paper coated with a finish that makes it waterproof and easy to clean. Clayton Homes call the top layer on their MDF cabinets ‘textured paper wrapping.’

    Laminate

Laminate is a more expensive material but it stands up against water and wears better than most of the other options.

For high-pressure laminate, they use a 4 step process: soaking sheets of wood-grain or solid printed paper in a plastic resin, letting them dry, layering them, and then thermosetting it all together. The sheets are then cured using 1200-200 psi pressure that creates a very smooth and durable surface thus the name high-pressure laminate. More expensive laminates may use plastic or foil instead of paper.

    MDF-with-paper-wrapping-from-Clayton-Homes

Clayton Homes used MDF cabinetry with paper wrapping in most of their homes until 2018 when they began using DuraCraft cabinets that are coated with a ‘proprietary PVC vinyl single-ply laminate material.’

    Melamine

Melamine is also called direct or low-pressure laminate because it’s created the same way as laminate. They take sheets of paper and soak them in resin solids to create a plastic-like surface using thermal fusion. Melamine is much thinner than laminate so it only requires 300-500 psi to adhere it to the MDF. It typically only has a 5-year lifespan.

    Veneer

A veneer is made from real wood so it’s more expensive but longer-lasting. A tree is peeled creating a very thin sheet. The sheets can be layered to create a stronger thicker material that can be stained and even sanded.

    Thermafoil

Thermofoil is made by heating and molding vinyl to the MDF in a special vacuum press. It’s the most affordable option of the four and offers a smooth durable surface. Thermofoil is prone to delaminating and peeling around the edges of cabinet doors.

How to Repair Mobile Home Cabinets

MDF-coated cabinetry simply isn’t made to last. I once read that MDF cabinets have anb estimated 7-10 year lifespan. Here are a few tips to repair common issues that occur with MDF cabints:

How to Repair a Top Layer that’s Peeling

While the MDF itself is strong and long-lasting, the top coatings aren’t quite as durable. It tends to peel away from the MDF.

    Paper

If the paper is still in one piece but has simply peeled away at a corner, Home Depot recommends using contact cement to glue it back down.

However, most of the time the topcoat tends to peel or curl around the edges and has missing areas like the image below:

    paper-coming-off-of-a-mdf-cabinet-in-mobile-home-pinterest-copy

To repair paper that has peeled at the corners and is missing an area you’ll first need to find a paper that matches the grain of the cabinet.

Places You May Find Matching Paper:

Finding a matching paper with the same colors and wood grain design will be difficult but it may not be impossible (we’re just talking about paper, not veneer). Check the following places:

    • Your local craft store
    • Scrapbooking section of Etsy
    • Print it yourself
    paper-with-wood-grain-designs
Various Kinds Of Grain Used On Mdf Cabinets.

If you managed to find a match, carefully cut away the loose paper without cutting into the MDF. You’ll probably have the best results by cutting the damaged paper away in a square or rectangle shape. That makes it easier to glue the matching paper.

To adhere a new piece of matching paper most pros recommend contact cement, just follow the manufacturer’s directions.

If the peeling is extensive (like the image below) you will probably want to paint or reface all of the cabinets. Learn how to do both below.

    paper-peeling-from-MDF-cabinet-in-mobile-home-hometalk

    Damaged Laminate, Melamine, or Thermafoil

If the laminate, malamine, or thermafoil is peeling or damaged it’s probably best to remove the top layer all together. A heat gun or hair dryer is all you need. The image below shows laminate being removed using a heat gun. You can watch the entire video below:

    How to Repair Crumbling MDF

If the MDF itself is crumbling around the edges of your cabinet or has chunks missing you may still be able to repair it using wood filler, epoxy putty, or Bondo (yes, the company that makes automotive filler, however, they have a product for homes). You can see exactly how it’s done at Faceliftfurniture.com but here’s the process in photos:

Facelift Furniture (.com) uses epoxy to repair wood and MDF damage all the time.

Check this link out to see more wood filler examples.

    Refacing Mobile Home Cabinets

Refacing means you remove the old cabinet doors and install completely new doors while keeping the original framework that the doors are attached to.

If you have a small kitchen, it may be cheaper and easier to just replace the doors instead of trying to repair them if there’s a lot of damage. You can buy new doors at Home Depot.

However, the most affordable way to replace mobile home cabinet doors is to make your own.

The Beneath My Heart blog has a wonderful tutorial that shows you how to make your own kitchen cabinet doors using a 4’x8′ sheet of MDF and trim. Amazingly, she was able to make the new doors for around $4.00 each! You can see exactly how to make the doors here. The photos below show how the trim was attached:

Here’s a video that shows you how to build shaker style cabinet doors:

How to Paint Mobile Home Cabinets

Painting is always the most affordable option to update kitchens if the MDF and laminate is in good condition.

Pro Tip: You can still use your original cabinet doors if they have slight crumbling along the edges or corners. All you have to do is cover the damage with shaker style trim around the edges of the cabinet door and paint.

The secret for painting laminate is all in the preparation. Properly sanding, priming, and cleaning the surface before you paint is extremely important. Here’s how to do all three:

    Step 1: Cleaning the Cabinets

Painting professionals always say that preparing the surface is the secret to getting great results when painting anything. This is especially true for kitchen cabinetry because you can’t see grease or small cooking particles and smoke that sticks to every surface.

The primer and paint must create a true bond to the surface it is applied or it will peel and bubble. The only way to do that is to clean the surface extremely well and then clean it again.

TSP is the most recommended cleaning agent for cabinets but a few bloggers say Dawn dishwashing liquid works just as well.

Step 2: Sanding (Only if Needed)

This is a controversial step because some MDF laminates won’t need to be sanded because it can rip and tear the laminate.

If you have newer cabinets with a paper wrap that is in good condition it’s probably best to skip this step.

For shiny laminate or melamine skin over your MDF you may want to lightly sand it to give the primer better gripping power. If your cabinets are especially shiny you can also use a liquid sander to degloss the surface. Liquid sander doesn’t really sand the surface, it just removes the shine so that primer and paint grips better.

Only sand with very fine sandpaper if it will help you achieve a smoother surface. Be sure to clean the surface again after sanding and use a tack cloth.

MobileHomeFarmHouse got great results after painting their mobile home cabinets and they shared their process:

1st we used gray Gripper primer. We applied two coats of this. Then we used BEHR paint and primer in one premium plus. We used two coats of that also. This formula was recommended to us by the man at the paint counter at Home Depot. They will mix up any paint color as a sample for around $3.50. Trust me it’s well worth getting many samples before deciding on a color. I think I had around 10. The colors do not look the same after going over the primer!

    @mobilehomefarmhouse on Instagram

    Step 3: Priming

Priming MDF cabinets is important. 9 out of 10 pros recommend a gripping oil-based primer for mobile home cabinets. A self-leveling oil-based primer is good for cabinets that have small inconsistencies or denting.

Click here for help choosing the best primer.

    Step 4: Sanding

Sanding between two coats of primer is industry standard. The sanding is done with very fine sandpaper.

    Step 5: Painting

Once the primer has been sanded and cured its time to paint. Two light coats of latex paint is most recommended.

Paint is definitely one of those ‘get what you pay for’ products, much like manufactured homes themselves.

    • Valspar’s Gloss Latex Enamel Interior/Exterior Paint and Primer in One
    • PrepRite ProBlock Interior/Exterior Latex Primer/Sealer
    • Benjamin Moore Aura
    • Olympic’s Zero-VOC Latex Paint in Semigloss
    • Varathane Floor Finish as a Sealer

    Step 6: Sealing

Using a sealant after painting your mobile home cabinets is a personal preference. Most pros don’t see a need for it if you’ve used the best paint and primer. Sometimes sealant can turn white paint yellow so be sure to test it out beforehand.

More Professional Advice for Painting Mobile Home Cabinets

The following tips are also recommended by painting pros.

Tip #1 Remove the doors and hardware. There are small painter triangles you can buy to hold the doors off the ground a bit.

Tip #2 Consider using a quality paint sprayer. I’ve had great results with the Wagner Spraytech 0529010 FLEXiO 590 HVLP Paint Sprayer.

Tip #3 Use a paint additive like Floetrol.

Tip #4 Strain the primer, paint, and the Floetrol well before using.

Tip #5 A lot of bloggers love chalk paint. If you’re interested in using it watch this video from Ace Hardware:

    • Finding old cabinet doors with broken glass (or a damaged middle section) at your local resale shop or Craigslist isn’t as hard as you’d think. You’ll just need to choose doors with a good frame. I’ve seen some homeowners cut out their own cabinets and add framing around the edges, too.

After the middle is removed, staple chicken wire to the back of the frame. This trick definitely adds a primitive country farmhouse look to the kitchen.

  • 4 Mobile Home Kitchen Remodeling Ideas You Will Love

Kitchen remodeling is one of our most searched topics at Mobile Home Living. It is also one of the hottest topics on our Facebook Group page, Mobile Home Living: Remodels and Repairs. It’s no surprise considering how much time we spend in the kitchen that we would want to make that space inviting and homey. These 4 refreshing kitchen remodeling ideas will help you do just that.

    Add a Backsplash

Backsplashes can add style and character to your kitchen, but that’s not all they are good for, here’s what Spruce.com says about them:

The purpose of a backsplash is primarily functional. It protects the wall behind the sink against water damage from inadvertent splashing.

In the kitchen, backsplashes cover other parts of the countertop beside the sink area. They also help protect the wall against grease splatter when cooking or food splatter during meal preparation.

If you don’t have the budget for a full backsplash project, you can try a more cost-effective idea if you have tileboard in your kitchen, just give it a fresh coat of paint to give it a new look.

    Get Creative

Upcycling has become super popular in recent years. It’s a great way to take something that would otherwise be trash and reuse it in your own home. Whether it be a piece of furniture or tin that’s been recycled, there’s no better way to let your creativity and DIY skills shine than with upcycling.

    Add Some Open Shelving

Open shelving is a great way to open up a small mobile home kitchen. They help to break up the look of all those cabinets and are great to put in odd spots to make the most of your space. Whether you use the open shelves for practical use or just to display your decorative items, they can be a great trick to change the look of your kitchen.

It’s amazing what a gallon of paint can do. These 30 kitchens all have different paint colors and they are all gorgeous.

    Red Cabinets Makes a Statement

Looking to make a statement? Red kitchen cabinets will help you do just that. Whether you choose a brighter red or perhaps a darker red that blends well with primitive decor, this color is dramatic and perfect if you want your kitchen to make a splash.

White Kitchen Cabinets are a Crisp and Clean Choice

White is the most popular color choices for kitchen cabinets for a few reasons: It brightens up the room and helps to make it feel larger, it’s a great foundation that you can add pops of color on, and it’s easy to clean.

You’d think a darker color would be easier to clean but that hasn’t been my experience at all. I painted my lower cabinets black and everything showed up on it.

This next kitchen was just recently featured here on Mobile Home Living. Desirée and Todd bought this 1988 Fuqua double wide manufactured home in Venice, Florida and began the remodel before they even moved in. It is jaw-dropping! The kitchen is bright, white, and so clean and sleek.

    Beach Cottage White Cabinets

We featured Ashley’s gorgeous modern farmhouse style double wide a few months ago. It was beyond gorgeous when we shared it but she has been busy remodeling the kitchen since we last checked in. It looks like a whole different kitchen now.

    Calming Grey Kitchen Cabinets

If you are looking for a soothing color to build your kitchen look around, grey is a great choice.

Green is Great for Mobile Home Kitchens

I featured this gorgeous mobile home kitchen renovation last year. I love everything about it. It was an even smaller space before the remodel but the homeowners managed to fit tons of storage, shelving, and all the appliances into a compact and well-organized space.

This is a Goldilocks green: it’s not too dark or too light, it’s just a perfect medium and I love it!

I really like when kitchen cabinets are darker on the bottom and white or lighter on the top. I think it helps ground the cabinetry so it feels like a part of the home. I’ve read that it also helps make a kitchen feel larger. This lighter olive green is a lovely color.

If you aren’t following Instagram user mobilehomefarmhouse you should be! Her mobile home remodeling story is so inspiring and it doesn’t hurt that she knows how to make a house into a beautiful home. I love her mix of colors in her kitchen.

Who says all your mobile home kitchen cabinet colors have to be the same?

This pretty cottage style kitchen is in a 1974 mobile home. Instagram user e.fiumara shared her painting process in the comments, “they were particle board with a hard “plastic” surface. I primed them with a gripping oil base primer and let it cure for 24 hrs, then painted them with a good quality latex with a primer built in. It’s been a year and a half. They still look fantastic. Cleaning and using the correct primer is very important.”

I shared this green kitchen years ago in an article about my favorite Craigslist mobile home finds and I still love it.

This single wide looks to be a Fleetwood Festival (aka Broadmore) and it’s one of Steven Lancaster’s favorites. Steven is a resident mobile home expert for us and knows more about mobile homes than anyone I know. The cabinet ‘island’ on the right is so unique and the washer and dryer are on the other side of those cabinets (if this indeed a Festival/Broadmore). It’s one of our favorite mobile home floor plans ever.

I love this next pale matte green color. Stained wood and paint is a unique combination but I think it works well. What do you think?

    Beautiful Blue

Blue is one of the most versatile colors you can choose for your kitchen cabinets. Whether you are a fan of the darker navy tones or you lean more towards the lighter shades of blue, the choices are endless.

Tina spent 6 years in the military and then bought a 1979 Fleetwood double wide and remodeled it into a beautiful cottage style home. The different colors in the kitchen are a perfect combination: red, white, and blue.

I think this kitchen with purple cabinets, black and white backsplash, and a wood countertop is great! It’s unique and clean and stylish. Two thumbs up!

Single Wide Manufactured Home With Blue Kitchen Cabinets

This beautiful teal blue cabinetry is actually 1994 Safari Continental RV that was remodeled but I had to share it because it’s so awesome. I love everything about this combination. In fact, I think I may copy it for my own kitchen (someday).

RV Remodel - After painting cabinets

This next mobile home kitchen cabinet color is unique. It was a home on the TV show Mobile Home Disasters and I believe the homeowner wanted a southwest style. The stenciling around the doors and the blue countertop are pretty cool. I bet with some white subway tile backsplash this would be a knockout.

Yummy Yellow Cabinets Brighten Up the Kitchen

Yellow, especially a warm buttery yellow like this one, is the perfect color to pair with black and white accents.

    Black is Back in Fashion

Black is a popular goto color for your kitchen cabinets. It works for just about any decorating style you want since you can add any accent color you want.

    This kitchen is a beauty!

    black cabinets with countertop

I think the main trick to keep black cabinets clean is to make sure they are glazed or glossed so that lint, dust, and fur (and all the small light-colored particles floating around) doesn’t stick to them so easily.

You can’t go wrong with black kitchen cabinets and stainless steel appliances. It’s so sleek and sophisticated.

Gain Primitive Perfection with Distressed Black Cabinets

Distressed black cabinets are a perfect touch for the ever-popular primitive decorating style. Chalk paint has taken over the decorating world in the last few years because it’s so easy to work with and covers just about anything. Popular Mechanics states, “Chalky paint is a hit with DIYers and people who refurbish and refinish old furniture. Not sure if your dresser has an oil- or latex-based finish? Don’t know if it’s stain, lacquer, shellac or polyurethane? Doesn’t matter. Chalky paint covers it all without the aggravating prep work.”

More Mobile Home Kitchen Cabinet Colors

If you like a little more pazazz in your kitchen these photos are for you. This next kitchen was done during the short-lived TV show called Mobile Home Disasters. I think this homeowner wanted a colorful retro 1960’s vibe and they certainly got it. Green appliances, blue cabinet bases, and orangish wood stained doors make a statement.

Unique 60s Style Kitchen In Mobile Home

This yellow and orange kitchen was found on Zillow and the stove caught my eye most. This is a colorful kitchen but I like the boldness. If you like color and own your home why not make it a true statement of yourself? I bet this homeowner is all kinds of fun!

1997 Colorful Single Wide - mobile home kitchen cabinet colors

Wood cabinets are a staple in kitchen design. Luckily, you can find stains in every color imaginable and you can’t go wrong with any of them. I’m sharing this next kitchen because it has a unique twist to the basic wood cabinet. The homeowner painted around the outer edge of the frosted glass and I think it’s a great look. If you have basic wood cabinets you can give it a splash of color just about anywhere!
