This is beautiful! The dark grey wall with white trim and the natural wood surrounding the fireplace is a great combination. New flooring completes the whole look.

The owner had this to say about their modern single wide mobile home update:

“My wife and I found this single wide mobile home in the mountains of North Carolina. The price was right, the location was great and with her great talent we got to work to make it a great little place in the mountains to get away”

Yes, sir, your wife has some true talent in choosing her materials and designs. That flooring is gorgeous and works well with dark wood is perfectly matched.

Inspiring Before and After Pics of an Interior Designer’s Manufactured Home Remodel

It’s not every day we get to see an interior designer’s manufactured home remodel. Nor do we get to see the before and after images of a manufactured home renovation. We get both today!

Charmaine Manley is a licensed interior designer in Oregon and owns Charmaine Manley Design, a successful design boutique.

In 2007, Charmaine and her family bought five acres in the high desert with views of snow-capped mountains. The property had everything she wanted: acreage, gorgeous views, privacy, and the right price. It also had an older double wide manufactured home with tons of potential.

A professional interior designer’s manufactured home remodel:

Mrs. Manley went right to work and shared details of her remodel on her blog called High Desert Diva. She fondly recalls one of her inspirations for small space design. Professional designers understand how important space is in a home and a lot of them will admit that smaller homes are a better choice for many families. She quotes Sarah Susanka, author of Not So Big House:

Susanka put into words what I had been thinking for years. She believes in designing homes “that favor the quality of its space over the quantity” not “the notion that houses should be designed to impress rather than nurture.”

    The Details

The cost was kept down by reusing and recycling materials whenever possible and they salvaged, reused, and re-purposed as many materials as possible. Being green, but as affordable and as beautiful as possible, was the ultimate goal of this interior designer’s manufactured home remodel. They also paid cash for everything as they went. They even paid cash for the property.

Being Green During the Remodel was Important to Charmaine
The double wide had the original wood paneling that seemed to be in every manufactured home from around the late seventies and early eighties so sheetrock was installed over the paneling. They used low or no VOC paint to coat it both the walls and ceiling.

The flooring in the manufactured home was likely original carpeting and linoleum so it was quickly replaced with Eco-Timber solid bamboo flooring (with non-toxic glue).

    The Master Bedroom

It’s hard to make a red room seem relaxing and soothing but Charmaine did it. You have to make sure you choose the right color, otherwise, you have a bright energetic room or one that looks a washed out. This is a perfect combination of a primitive maroon red with golden tan accents.

Positioning the bed in the corner is pretty cool. You could use the hidden corner for storage space.

  • A Peek Inside a Remodeled English Holiday Home

We’ve been fortunate to feature mobile home remodels from all across the United States but we’ve never had a chance to share a remodeled English holiday home until now.

Peter McGowan, a member of our Facebook group Mobile Home Living: Remodels and Repairs, was nice enough to share his newly remodeled English holiday home with us. It’s a gorgeous home that proves any factory-built house, regardless of where it’s built or what size it is, can become a stylish modern home.

In England, factory-built homes intended for full-time living are called holiday homes and are typically located in parks. These homes are not quite as stereotyped and stigmatized as mobile homes are here in the US.

    Sturdy but Boring

Peter purchased the 1999 holiday home for around 1300 Pounds ($1670). Although nothing special, the home was sound and had tons of potential. All it needed was some TLC and imagination.

English Holiday Homes Are Typically Smaller Than American Manufactured Homes.

Finding the Hidden Beauty in This Remodeled English Holiday Home

Peter gave us a rundown of his completed projects to the remodeled English holiday home so far.

First, he essentially gutted the home. He ripped out the spare bedroom, added a wall in the kitchen, installed a gas log-burning stove, and added a built-in the seating area for the home.

Next, he added new flooring and carpet, blinds, trimmed out the windows and painted and wallpapered the interior. Finally, he added the skirting board to the exterior. The cost of the remodels so far has cost around £2000 (around $2500).

    The Interior Was Gutted.

While gutting the interior walls and windows, Peter decided to go ahead and upgrade the ceiling as well. In the image below you can see how an English static caravan is constructed. The trusses look to be 24″ OC.

There is so much to love about this remodeled English holiday home. The cozy sitting area surrounded by the contrasting gray and black wallpaper creates a modern but homey feel. It’s a completely different style from what Peter started with.

Great Advice for Homeowners About to Remodel their Home

I asked Peter if he had any advice or tips for other homeowners that are interested in remodeling their own home. His advice was to take your time and don’t be afraid.

Finishing a remodel, whether a whole home or just a single room, is one of the best feelings in the world. It’s common to want to rush through a remodel, especially if you are living in the home during the project but Peter recommends taking your time.

He also suggests homeowners push their fears aside and take the first step to create their dream home. If you break an entire project into smaller tasks it’s easier to handle and doesn’t get as overwhelming.

The Detail Around The Windows Adds To The Charm Of The Room.

Details are important, especially in a small home. By framing the window with decorative trim and corner pieces, Peter gave the windows more prominence and helped lighten up the room.

It’S Amazing How Much Flooring Can Transform A Room.

    Finding the Perfect Balance

The end result of Peter’s remodel is beautiful!

It’s difficult to make a small space seem cozy and while still being bright and airy but Peter found the perfect balance. Without all that light entering the room, the darker walls could have easily created a dark cavernous space. However, the darker walls and flooring paired with all that light from the many windows was a perfect match for each other. It’s a great lesson in balance for anyone living in a smaller home.

Peter has plans to finish the kitchen remodel and update the bedroom and bathroom to match the rest of the home. Hopefully, he will share his final projects with us too.

  • A Magnificent Mobile Home Makeover

This mobile home makeover will make your heart sing!
I love featuring great mobile home remodels. Especially the ones that should be on fancy home magazine covers. This one will definitely be on a cover when my dream of publishing the Mobile Home Living Magazine comes true (working on it)!

Geneva is the publisher of a very entertaining and lovely blog called “My Heart’s Song” and she has a wonderful story to tell about how she became a proud owner of a beautiful mobile home. Actually, she has several great stories to tell so be prepared to sit a spell! Long story short, they were retiring and living in a gorgeous but huge brick home. Eventually, she and her husband Buzz decided they needed to downsize, live more simply and debt-free.

They sold their brick mini-mansion and purchased a used 16×80′ 2001 single wide with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths they call “Whisper Cottage.” Once you read the whole story you will understand the name completely. I have so much respect for them, not a lot of people would be willing to make such a drastic change of lifestyle. They immediately commenced to remodeling it into a true dream (mobile) home. Allow me to tell the story with photos:

    From this:
    To this:

They had one month to remodel the mobile home enough to be liveable in before their lease went out on the transitional apartment they had gotten while looking for the perfect place. The post “Our First 30 Days has a complete photo timeline of the initial remodel.

Once they moved in the remarkable transformations only got better!
    From this:
    To this:

Here’s the rest of her home. I can only come up with so many adjectives, so I’ll keep to just showing the photos. You can thank me in the comments..

Yep, I’m jealous. I’m also thankful that there are such talented people out there that prove living in a mobile home can be just as fabulous as living in a stick built home.
Tomorrow we will feature an interview with Geneva. I think by asking a few well thought out questions (that I completely stole from a very popular site about apartment remodeling), we can learn the good, the bad and the ugly about decorating, remodeling, and updating mobile homes. Which, surprisingly enough, is exactly what this blog is about!
Thank you so much for reading Mobile Home Living. Make sure to come back tomorrow for the interview. Your not going to want to miss Geneva’s insight, tips and honest answers.
As always, please like us on Facebook here, follow us on Twitter here and do all the other things you do when you like a blog (tell your friends, sign up for the feed, SHARE it on every sight you go to, etc). Hope you have a great day!
