Tiny House Blog was one of the first blogs to feature mobile homes in a positive light. They were small by design and green by accident. Remodeling and updating them became the frugal shortcut to living well.

Of all the things that could lift the trailer trash stereotype, being green and having an environmentally friendly lifestyle finally got the stigma at least shifted.

One of their finest examples of remodeled vintage mobile homes is this 1956 Spartan Executive Mansion owned by Raymond and Colleen.

Raymond and Colleen apparently own several vintage models, a 1951 Spartan is mentioned in the comments by Colleen. She uses it as her sewing studio! I’m sure by owning several they know exactly where to put their money on the remodeling. Here’s Raymond’s description from the feature on Tiny House Blog:

“This view of the kitchen (above) shows the meat of the remodel (aside from removing all of the bulkheads forwards); laminate floor from the bathroom door forward, tile aft, with electric heat under the kitchen, bath, and bedroom. The original 24″ stove top and it’s associated cabinets were removed and a modern 30″range placed and I built a “side-board” that encloses our garbage/recycle with a narrow cabinet with drawers for utensils and the blender and other kitchen “stuff” that we don’t want cluttering up the kitchen counter. The wall oven is slated to go so that we can have a high-efficiency dishwasher in that location. The counter-tops are Granite and I managed to get the formica up in one piece, eliminating most of the metal strips that usually support these panels.

The article goes on to mention that they replace the window facings with yellow cedar and had a talented stone cutter cut 5 pieces of black granite.

This Spartan Executive Mansion is another great example of how any mobile or manufactured home can change with a few updates. Flooring and counters are probably the most popular choices because the make the most impact. This Spartan has a homey, comfortable vibe that makes me just want to cozy up to a good book on a rainy day and enjoy every single minute of it. Perhaps, half as cozy as the dog looks.

I just bought some property that has a house on it. When we got inside the house we found a 1956 Spartan Executive Mansion inside the house. It has been inside the house for about 47 years. Everything in the trailer looks like it did in 1956. Lamp shades and probably the curtains are there. Send me a Email if you would like pics. We are located 20 miles south of Huntsville, Alabama.

      Yes, it’s in Bluff, Utah.
I haven’t been on this site for a long time. Who’s asking?

    Hi,

Does anyone know how they prepped the space for the wood stove? Usually when I mention putting a wood stove in a trailer I get a lot of head shaking and “Oh Noez!”, but clearly it can be done.
    Any tips would be welcome!
    Natalie

      Hi Natalie!

It absolutely can be done in any home! Just make sure you follow your home insurance guidelines – some of them are ridiculous. Here’s a couple articles on how to install a wood stove. We bought a little centennial wood stove from craigslist (about 2.5 foot high and circular) and will be installing it during Thanksgiving week and I’ll be sure to take lots of photos and write an informative article on it. Till then, here’s the articles I found:
